Prepare Now for the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season |
As the calendar flips to June this weekend, the Seminole Office of Emergency Management would like to remind you to prepare for the 2024 hurricane season.
Hurricane season spans from June 1 to November 30, with most storms occurring between August and October. Begin preparing for an active storm season now by reviewing your family’s plans, replenishing your disaster kit, testing your generator, and registering for emergency alerts from Seminole County. Find a full list of hurricane preparations at PrepareSeminole.org.
As a friendly reminder, Seminole County residents can also take advantage of the state’s sales tax holiday that begins June 1. The 2024 Disaster Preparedness The 2024 Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holidays are June 1–14 and August 24–September 6. During these periods, Florida residents can purchase emergency preparedness items tax free. A list of eligible supplies is available online. |

Seminole County kicked off preparations for this hurricane season with a visit from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Hurricane Hunters at the Orlando Sanford International Airport. Students and visitors toured the NOAA and U.S. Air Force Reserve aircraft that fly into the world’s worst weather. |

Construction Underway for Fire Station 39 |
Construction is underway for the Seminole County Fire Department’s (SCFD) new $10.7 million Fire Station 39. Crews have completed the exterior walls and roof structure for the 13,356 sq. ft. station, set to open in late 2024.
The new station will serve the Northwest area of the County in the Paola/Heathrow area and alleviate call volume loads for nearby SCFD Stations. Amenities will include four apparatus bays, a direct source exhaust capture system, a self-contained personal protective equipment (PPE) storage room, crew sleeping quarters, offices, a kitchen, a fitness facility, an outdoor porch, a standby generator, a fueling depot, and EMS supply storage.

Seminole County Holds Memorial Day Remembrance |
|
|
On May 24, the Seminole County Board of County Commissioners, Seminole County Fire Department, and Seminole County Sheriff's Office presented the 2024 Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony in tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in our nation's armed forces and as first responders. |

Seminole County Recognizes May's Veteran of the Month |
Seminole County Commissioners proclaimed U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Joshua Marzolf as the May Veteran of the Month. Sergeant First Class Marzolf served as a Communication Systems Specialist on several combat deployments in Syria, Iraq, and Qatar honorably from July 2003 until 2010. A Lieutenant with the Seminole County Fire Department, Marzolf also leads the Peer Support team. |

Habitat for Humanity Build Day |
Seminole County is closer to the opening of a new affordable housing subdivision in Sanford, the first of its kind built in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Seminole County & Greater Apopka.
The project, expected to be completed in June, got a special touch with a visit from Vice-Chair Andria Herr and other Seminole County team members who installed flower beds and landscaping. |

Seminole County is hosting a Job Fair on Wednesday, June 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lake Mary Events Center (260 N Country Club Rd, Lake Mary). Job seekers are invited to learn more about available in-office and field positions with the County. No registration necessary. |

New Domestic Violence Service Center Opens |
|
|
The Seminole County Clerk of Court Grant Maloy has opened a new Domestic Violence Service Center, located at 91 Eslinger Way, Sanford. The center assists those in harmful situations in filing for a protective injunction with the courts. It also partners with SafeHouse of Seminole to offer support, shelter, and legal services to victims of domestic violence. |

Seminole County History |
Join the Museum and the Seminole County Office of Emergency Management for a look at hurricanes, diseases, and other emergencies from Seminole County’s history. This limited exhibit opens Saturday, June 1.
