Ten Years of Transformation |
As the Penny Sales Tax nears the end of its third term, its transformative impact is visible throughout Seminole County. The One Cent Infrastructure Sales Tax, approved by voters in 1991, 2001, and 2014, is collected through a one percent (1.0%) local sales tax. Beyond roads and sidewalks, it has transformed public infrastructure, making Seminole County a better place to live.
The Penny Sales Tax supports road repaving and widening, bridge replacements, and pedestrian measures like upgraded sidewalks and traffic signals. It funds drainage systems, reducing street flooding with new culverts, as well as stormwater facilities and retention ponds, safeguarding our springs, lakes, and rivers. Parks are also a part of public infrastructure, and the Penny facilitates improvements to multi-use trails, boardwalks, and other recreation amenities.
Part of the Penny Sales Tax is allocated to local municipalities and Seminole County Public Schools for similar improvements. Over the past ten years, several schools have received funds for HVAC and roof renovations, new classroom additions, and upgraded sports facilities.
The Penny Sales Tax has made a lasting impact on our daily lives. With 100,000 more people expected in Seminole County by 2045, renewing this tax would continue to improve infrastructure, schools, and flood mitigation efforts. For project highlights, visit seminolecountyfl.gov/penny. |

Back to School Safety |
Seminole County students head back to school next week! According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, in 2022, there were nearly 3,000 traffic crashes involving school buses. Remember these tips to stay safe this school year.
Drivers:
-
When a school bus is stopped on a two-lane or multi-lane, paved across road, vehicles traveling in both directions must come to a full stop.
-
When a school bus is stopped on a road with a divided highway, vehicles behind the bus must come to a full stop. Vehicles on the opposite side can proceed with caution.
-
In school zones, slow down and pay attention. Also, remember Florida Statute 316.306, prohibits motorists from using a cell phone in a handheld manner in a designated school crossing, school zone or active work zone area.
Parents remind your children to:
-
Stay at least ten feet, or five giant steps, away from the curb.
-
Always wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and bus driver signals for you to board.
-
Face forward after finding a seat on the bus.
-
Exit the bus after it stops and look left-right-left for cars before crossing a street.
