Paving the Way for Expanded Connectivity

Construction is wrapping up on a multi-use trail along Celery Ave from Mellonville Ave to South Elliot Street, adjacent to Tim Raines Sports Park. This collaborative project with the City of Sanford has entered its final stages, with a new 12-foot-wide concrete trail now in place, replacing the old sidewalk along Celery Ave.

The County has consistently invested in expanding and enhancing its trail systems, ensuring they meet the needs of the community by connecting parks, schools, historical sites, urban areas, and more. The approval of the Penny Sales Tax in 2014, a shared surtax amongst the County, its seven cities, and the school district, earmarked significant funding for infrastructure projects, including essential trail developments such as this one.

This newly completed trail section will soon link with an upcoming project designed to connect Sanford’s Riverwalk to SR 415, addressing a vital missing link in the Lake Monroe Trail Loop. Phase I of this next project, set to break ground in fall 2024, will extend the multi-use trail along Mellonville Ave from East Seminole Blvd to Celery Ave, continuing along Celery Ave from Mellonville Ave to just east of Sipes Ave. Phase 1 will be funded through a combination of the third generation of the Penny Sales Tax and a Local Agency Program (LAP) agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation.

Political Campaign Sign Recycling

Following Tuesday’s Primary Election, Seminole County, the League of Women Voters of Seminole County, and PureCycle Technologies, Inc. have partnered to collect and recycle plastic yard/bandit/snipe signs, such as campaign signs. These signs are made from $5 plastic (polypropylene), a complex and costly material to recycle, causing them to often end up in landfills. Pure Cycle will process and transform the signs into sustainable, ultra-pure recycled resin that can be reused multiple times.

Your waste hauler cannot recycle these signs; they will be disposed of in the landfill. To recycle these plastic yard signs, please drop them off at the Central Transfer Station for free recycling through September 3, 2024.

Drop Off Details:

  • Central Transfer Station, 1950 FL-419, Longwood

  • Open 7:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m., Monday–Saturday (Closed Sunday)

  • Please separate signs from metal and wooden stakes and place in the provided bins

A second collection will take place in November.

Rosenwald School Undergoes Demolition

Demolition is underway at the Rosenwald School, where the remaining three buildings will be removed to make way for a new community center. The center will include additional resources to serve this Altamonte Springs community. This historic school opened in 1931 and educated children in the area for nearly 80 years.
