Commissioner Zembower at a Podium

Message from Chairman Jay Zembower

Dear Residents,

While Hurricane Milton has passed, the full extent of its impact is still being realized. A number of creeks and rivers in Seminole County are continuing to rise and are expected to reach flood stage in the coming days. Please remain cautious, particularly in low-lying areas and near bodies of water.

Our emergency services are actively monitoring the situation and are here to support you. If your area is at risk of flooding, make sure you have a plan in place and stay informed through the County’s communication channels.

Stay safe, and thank you for your continued resilience.

Sincerely,
Jay Zembower
Chairman, Seminole County Board of County Commissioners

Rivers Flooding: What You Need to Know

As Hurricane Milton’s waters recede, Seminole County rivers, including the St. Johns River and Little Wekiva River, continue to rise and are nearing or have reached flood stage. Residents in flood-prone areas should stay vigilant and take steps to protect their homes.

For those in affected areas, a sandbag distribution site will open in Geneva on Friday, October 11, at the Old Geneva Volunteer Fire Station, located at 217 Second Street. A second sandbag distribution site will open Saturday, October 12, at Lake Monroe Wayside Park, located at 4150 NW U.S. 17-92, Sanford. Residents can collect sandbags to help protect their properties from further flooding. Sandbag sites are unstaffed and available 24 hours a day. Please monitor County updates for further details.

Preparing for Debris Collection

While we prepare for normal operations to resume, please ensure your storm debris is ready for curbside collection. Here’s how to help ensure a smoother collection process:

  • Separate vegetative debris (branches, logs, and leaves) from construction and demolition waste (building materials, large items). Place these in two distinct piles.
  • Keep debris off streets, sidewalks, and storm drains, and away from fire hydrants, mailboxes, or other structures.
  • If possible, cut branches and logs into 4-foot sections. Consider combining your pile with your neighbor’s to create larger piles for quicker collection.
  • Avoid using plastic bags for vegetative debris. Use bins, paper bags, or stack the debris in piles.

We appreciate your patience as we work to restore normal operations. Debris collection may take several weeks. Stay tuned for updates on debris collection.
