Restoring Habitat with Prescribed Burns |
During the dry season, the Seminole County Fire Department, Seminole County Parks and Recreation, and agency partners team up to conduct prescribed burns on County properties. A prescribed burn is a carefully ignited and controlled fire in a natural lands area. Land managers write a "prescription" to restore the health of the land.
Why do they need to set fire to the land to manage it? Wildfires sparked by lightning have occurred in Florida for millennia. Plants and animals adapted to this and still depend on it today. The fires nourish the soil with nutrients and clear the way for more plant diversity by eliminating overgrowth.
The burns benefit people, too. Mimicking the lightning-caused fires from the past in a safe and controlled way helps reduce the risk of dangerous, uncontrolled wildfires. They also improve access for outdoor recreation.
Crews will be conducting burns at County wilderness areas through the spring. Keep an eye out for property closures by following Seminole County Parks, Trails and Recreation on Facebook.
