Historic 1765 Map Unveiled at Museum of Seminole County History |
|
Seminole County residents now have the opportunity to see the earliest known surveyed map of our area, a restored 1765 cartographic record created by German surveyor William Gerard de Brahm. The map was unveiled July 31 at the Museum of Seminole County History.
The map shows familiar landmarks in their eighteenth-century context, along with early settlements and geographic features that predate Seminole County’s founding by more than 150 years. It offers concrete evidence that this area was active during Florida’s colonial period, long before it became a U.S. territory in 1821.
“This is more than a map, it’s a tangible link to our past,” said Seminole County Chairman Jay Zembower, who spoke at the unveiling. “It shows that this area was an active part of Florida’s colonial history long before Seminole County was established.” |

Museum Coordinator Bennett Lloyd prepared the map for display in partnership with the Seminole County Historical Society. Chairman Jay Zembower, Dr. Deborah Bauer (Seminole County Historical Commissioner), and Casselberry City Commissioner Anthony Aramendia (President of the Seminole Cultural Arts Council) all participated in the ceremonial unveiling.

Red Bull To Bring Action-Packed Event to Seminole County |
|
Excitement is building for a high-energy thrill expected to draw thousands to Seminole County next month.
Altamonte Springs was selected to be the first U.S. city to host Red Bull's Tandem Roller Coaster event. The water obstacle course, set at Cranes Roost Park, is expected to draw more than 30,000 spectators.
Standing alongside Professional Wakeboarder Guenther Oka, Chairman Jay Zembower joined Altamonte Springs Mayor Pat Bates, Greater Orlando Sports Commission CEO Jason Siegel, Seminole County Tourism Division Manager Danny Trosset and Seminole County Director of Economic Development and Tourism Gui Cunha to celebrate the opportunity.
About 40 teams will be chosen to design and build creative coasters that can cross the course without falling into the water. Teams will be judged on creativity, spirit, and time, with the highest-scoring team taking the win.
The event takes place on Saturday, September 27. |

Community Steps Up For Clear the Shelters Campaign |
|
Seminole County Animal Services is participating in the nationwide campaign, Clear the Shelters, throughout the month of August. The campaign has helped nearly 1.2 million pets and raised more than $5 million to support shelters and rescues across the country. For the next month, all cats and dogs are up for $5 adoptions.
While the campaign is halfway completed, Clear the Shelters has been a great success with more than 100 animals adopted within a two-week period.
Every adoption opens a space for another animal in need. The shelter is still at capacity with over 150 animals.
People who are unable to adopt can still help by donating, fostering, or volunteering. This provides the animals with the care, support, and second chances they need for their future forever homes. |

Firefighters, Police Team Up for Back to School Bash |
|
More than 200 students started the school year ready thanks to the Seminole County Fire Department’s 3rd Annual Back to School Bash. Spearheaded by Lt. Chris Torres, the event has grown each year to provide essential school supplies for local Boys & Girls Club members. Commissioner Lee Constantine joined in to help hand out backpacks.
This year’s bash was the biggest yet, marking the first-ever partnership with the Altamonte Springs Police Department and support from Fairwinds Credit Union, Action Church, and other community partners. |

Communications Team Honored for Excellence in Public Relations |
|
Seminole County’s Office of Communications is proud to be recognized with the Golden Pinnacle Award for Government Team of the Year by the Florida Public Relations Association (FPRA).
The award was presented during FPRA’s Golden Image Awards, which celebrate excellence in public relations across Florida. In addition, the team earned both the Golden Image Award and the Judges’ Award for public outreach initiatives and graphic design. |

Tools 4 Seminole Schools |
|
There is still time to donate unused school supplies for Tools 4 Seminole Schools. Donations help teachers stock classrooms and support students from low-income households. The drive runs through August 23 with drop-off bins at all Seminole County Library branches.
Every $1 donated provides $10 worth of supplies. |

The Seminole County Bar Association Legal Aid Society is offering free legal guidance to veterans at the Central Branch library. Volunteer attorneys will be available to answer questions. The event is free for veterans in Seminole County.
