Scout Soft Launch Expands Ahead of October 15 Start |
|
Seminole County is just days away from the official launch of its new on-demand public transportation system, Scout. Four of the five service zones are now open for travel, with expansion to the Econ Zone coming October 15, when full service begins.
Since the soft launch began on September 17, more than 4,800 rides have been completed as residents continue to try out the new system. Fares went into effect on October 3 for the zones currently open.

Residents who haven’t yet tried Scout are encouraged to download the Ride Freebee app and set up an account. Scout has provided a step-by-step instructional video to guide users through the process.

National Fire Prevention Week Highlights Lithium-Ion Battery Safety |
|
National Fire Prevention Week runs from October 5–11, but the Seminole County Fire Department is campaigning all month long. This year’s campaign, Spark Safety: Take C.H.A.R.G.E of Battery Hazards, educates residents on the best safety practices for using lithium-ion batteries at home.
Lithium-ion batteries can be found in everyday products such as smartphones, scooters, e-bikes, power tools, laptops, and more. While these batteries are ideal for powering modern devices, the technology also poses new fire risks if disposed of in regular waste collection. Lithium-ion batteries contain flammable electrolytes that can ignite when punctured or overheated. These fires can burn hotter, faster, and more persistently than ordinary fires.
Residents can “spark safety” and take C.H.A.R.G.E. of Battery Hazards by following the acronym:
Choose certified products
Handle with Care
Always stay alert
Recycle batteries properly
Get out quickly if a fire starts
Educate others
Residents are advised to take precautions such as only using charging equipment that comes with the product, storing batteries away from extreme temperatures, and not charging larger equipment overnight.
Community members can safely dispose of their lithium-ion and rechargeable batteries for free at the Seminole County Central Transfer Station, Monday through Saturday, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., located at 1950 SR 419 in Longwood. |

Community Rallies to Support Overcrowded Animal Shelter |
|
The community truly stepped up last week to support Seminole County Animal Services during a critical time, when the shelter was operating at 151% capacity. With kennels full, animals in off-site boarding, and some even housed in crates, the situation was dire.
Thanks to an incredible outpouring of compassion and action, more than 44 cats and 38 dogs found loving homes in just five days.
This response comes at a meaningful time—October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, a nationwide campaign that highlights the millions of dogs in shelters waiting for their second chance.
Throughout October, all cats and dogs are available for adoption for just $5. Those unable to adopt can still make a difference by donating, fostering, volunteering, or spreading awareness. Every effort helps provide care, support, and brighter futures for the animals awaiting their forever homes. |

Imagine A Day Without Water Campaign |
|
Water covers roughly 40% of Seminole County, from lakes and rivers to the springs that make our community Florida’s Natural Choice. Seminole County is bringing awareness to the national Imagine A Day Without Water campaign on October 16 – a day that reminds us how vital water is to our daily lives and why it’s so important to protect it.
At Seminole County Libraries, children can check out water-themed books on display, learn fun facts, and color their favorite way to use water for a special sticker. The activity helps raise awareness about the value of water, and children’s artwork will be displayed at all library branches for the community to enjoy. |

Stay Alert, Stay Secure: Cybersecurity Awareness Month |

This October, Seminole County Emergency Management and Information Technology encourage all residents to stay safe online during Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
Cyber threats include phishing emails, malware, and identity theft. Adopting strong security practices remains the most effective defense. Recommended measures include creating strong, unique passwords, enabling multifactor authentication, keeping your devices and software updated, and exercising caution when clicking links or sharing information.
Staying informed and practicing these basics can help reduce risks for individuals, families, and businesses. |
