Supporting Seminole’s Veterans with Newly Revamped Veterans Services Team |
|
This Veterans Day, Seminole County proudly honors all who have served and those who continue to serve. With more than 35,000 veterans calling Seminole County home, the County recently elevated Veterans Services to its own division to enhance support and improve customer service.
Leading the new Veterans Service Division is Joey Cote, a 21-year U.S. Army veteran. Retiring in 2024 as a Sergeant First Class, Joey’s military career took him around the world—from Afghanistan to South Korea, Japan, Hawaii, and Fort Meade in Polk County—where he led more than 80 soldiers as a Platoon Sergeant.
From his active-duty service to his later role as an Army recruiter, Joey has continued to live by a motto given to him by a former commanding officer. In South Korea in 2010, that officer handed him a difficult task and said, “There’s a yes somewhere — go find it.” |

Joey believes his years of service continue to shape who he is and fuel his commitment to helping others. Now serving as Seminole County’s lead Veterans Services Officer, he is dedicated to helping veterans access the benefits they have earned, while fostering connection to local resources and to one another.
Joey’s leadership, experience, and passion will help ensure that every veteran in our community knows one thing: there’s always a “yes” waiting to be found.

Veterans Day Closures |
|
Seminole County government offices will be closed on Tuesday, November 11, in observance of Veterans Day. Seminole County Library branches and Seminole County Animal Services will also be closed. Regular business hours will resume on Wednesday, November 12.
There will be no interruption to curbside collection service for unincorporated Seminole County residents. The Seminole County Landfill and Central Transfer Station will remain open during regular operating hours. |

Veterans Day Proclamation |
|
The Seminole County Board of County Commissioners honored local veterans on October 28, issuing a proclamation of gratitude and designating November 11 as Veterans Day.
Seminole County also highlighted Operation Green Light for Veterans, a national initiative supporting veterans’ transition to civilian life.
Residents and businesses are encouraged to display a green light in the window of their home or workplace from November 4–11 to honor their service and sacrifice. |

Seminole County Celebrates National Recycling Day |
|
Cereal boxes, newspapers, milk jugs and soup cans are all items that can be recycled curbside. However, not everything belongs in the green bin. Items such as Styrofoam, red solo cups and greasy pizza boxes cannot be recycled and should be placed in the trash instead.
America Recycles Day, celebrated on November 15, serves as a reminder about the importance of recycling and other sustainable practices, such as donating reusable items to help cut back on landfill waste.
Last year, Seminole County recycled approximately 19,000 tons of materials. That number does not include other recycling streams, such as electronic waste or the County’s Sneaker Recycle program, which also help reduce the amount of waste that would otherwise end up in the landfill.
Seminole County’s public outreach efforts continue to expand through new educational resources for teachers, parents, and the public. The Seminole County Solid Waste Division has launched a Recycling Resource Guide designed for various school grade levels, helping educators teach best practices and guide students to make sustainable choices. |

Scout Demand Grows |
|
Less than a month after its official launch, Seminole County’s new on-demand public transportation service, Scout, has already provided more than 11,000 rides to roughly 12,600 passengers. The Monroe Zone, which serves Sanford, continues to be the most popular, followed by the Lake Mary Zone, which covers Lake Mary and Longwood.
Scout offers several discounted fare options to make trips more affordable. Seniors, students, and income-eligible riders receive reduced fares; trips to and from SunRail stations are just $2; and Access Plus cardholders ride for $1.

New Destinations Await |
|
Jetsetters have a new getaway from Orlando Sanford International Airport.
Seminole County Board of County Commissioners Chairman Jay Zembower and other leaders attended the Arajet ribbon-cutting October 26 to celebrate the launch of a new direct route from Sanford to the Dominican Republic.
Flights operate three times a week on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, offering connections from Central Florida to several major Latin American cities, including Buenos Aires, São Paulo and Mexico City. |
