Step Behind the Scenes: Seminole County’s 2026 Citizen’s Academy |

Seminole County’s Citizen’s Academy returns this spring with a free, family-friendly open-house series that gives residents a behind-the-scenes look at how County departments serve the community.
The six-event series runs April 18 through May 9, with each session highlighting a different department through tours, demonstrations, and interactive experiences. |

Midway Project Marks Milestone |
|
Seminole County recently broke ground on the Midway Drainage Improvement Project, marking a major step forward in efforts to enhance flood mitigation and infrastructure in the historic Midway community. Chairman and District 5 Commissioner Andria Herr led the ceremony, joined by County Commissioners, project staff, and local residents.
The groundbreaking celebrated the start of construction on the project’s first three phases, which will help address long-standing drainage challenges and improve resiliency for the area. The initiative represents a continued investment in the safety and sustainability of the Midway community.
Funded through a combination of federal, state, and local sources—including the County’s Penny Sales Tax—the project represents more than $30 million in proposed improvements.

County Deploys Sentinel Chickens for Mosquito Surveillance |
|
Dozens of sentinel chickens have settled into coops across Seminole County as Mosquito Control prepares for the rainy season. The chickens help detect mosquito-borne viruses. When bitten by mosquitoes carrying arboviruses, the chickens develop antibodies without becoming sick or spreading the viruses.
Earlier this week, the team collected blood samples before placing the chickens in seven coops across the County. Weekly testing will continue throughout the season. If antibodies are detected, it may indicate that disease-carrying mosquitoes are active in that area, allowing crews to target treatment where it is needed most.
At the end of the season, the chickens “retire” and are given to community members, including local farmers.
Residents can also help reduce mosquito breeding by draining standing water around their homes and protect themselves from bites by using mosquito repellent. |

Cross Seminole Trail Bridge Gets a Refresh |
|
The popular Cross Seminole Trail pedestrian crossover at Rinehart Boulevard in Lake Mary has a fresh look. Crews recently completed restoration work on the pedestrian bridge.
The nearby pedestrian crossover at Lake Mary Elementary also received an upgrade. Both projects, completed between January and early March, included pressure washing, surface preparation, priming and repainting to improve the appearance of the structures. |

All American Challenge and Training Camp Family Fun Day |
|
Families are invited to enjoy a free Family Fun Day with firefighters from across the country. Watch live firefighter competitions, explore emergency vehicles during Touch-A-Truck, and visit food trucks and vendor booths. The event celebrates the conclusion of the All-American Challenge, where more than 200 elite firefighters compete to showcase their training skills.

Clothing Swap |
|
Give your old clothing a new life by joining Seminole County’s first-ever Spring Cleaning Clothing Swap. Residents are invited to trade and swap their old clothing to reduce textile waste. Interested participants can bring five to ten items to exchange with others and find new pieces to take home. Volunteer seamstresses will be on-site to provide minor hemming, sewing, and alterations to help refresh worn items for their second life.
