Hurricane Action Day Strengthens Community Preparedness |
|
The Seminole County Office of Emergency Management hosted its third annual Hurricane Action Day, equipping residents with tools and information to prepare for the 2026 hurricane season.
More than 160 volunteers, residents, and community partners attended, doubling participation from 2025 and reflecting growing interest in disaster preparedness across Seminole County. Attendees received expert guidance on severe weather, disaster-related mental health, and legal services during emergencies, and took part in hands-on demonstrations and trainings including roofing safety, chainsaw and generator safety, debris management, and more.
The event concluded with a Volunteer Expo, where residents connected with 16 local nonprofit, faith-based, and volunteer organizations supporting disaster response and recovery efforts across the County. Residents were encouraged to build disaster kits gradually by purchasing essential supplies throughout the season.

New Trail Segment Expands Connections Around Lake Monroe |
|
The Lake Monroe Trail Loop reached a milestone this week as Seminole County, the City of Sanford, and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) celebrated the completion of Phase 1 of the project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The new trail segment along Mellonville Avenue and Celery Avenue creates an important connection in the trail system, bringing the area one step closer to completing the Lake Monroe Trail Loop and linking Sanford's RiverWalk to State Road 415.
“What these trails do is make sure our communities stay connected,” said Seminole County Board of County Commissioners Chairman Andria Herr. “It connects our residents with our businesses and our residents with one another.”
This milestone highlights the impact of strong partnerships, with funding provided through a combination of Seminole County's voter-approved Infrastructure Sales Tax, commonly known as the Penny Sales Tax, and a Local Agency Program (LAP) agreement with FDOT. |

Seminole County Partners to Expand Homeownership Opportunities |
|
A new affordable housing community is taking shape in Seminole County as construction moves forward at Legacy Square in Sanford.
Last week, Seminole County partnered with Habitat for Humanity Seminole-Apopka and Wharton-Smith Construction Group for a Wall Raising Ceremony, celebrating the next phase of development. Seminole County Board of County Commissioners Vice Chair Amy Lockhart joined community leaders, future homeowners, and project partners to mark the milestone.
"Today is about a lot more than raising walls," said Vice Chair Lockhart. "It is about raising opportunities, creating stability for families, and demonstrating what can happen when government, nonprofits, and the business community come together with a shared vision."
Once complete, Legacy Square will include 19 single-family homes designed to create affordable homeownership opportunities for local families. Ten of those homes are being made possible through a $1.4 million investment from Seminole County. |
