Seminole County Library Launches New “Library of Things” |
|
The Seminole County Library System is preparing for an exciting new chapter! Following a successful Summer Reading Program, the Library is keeping the momentum going into fall with the launch of its new “Library of Things” on August 31, 2026.
The new collection gives residents the opportunity to borrow non-traditional items at no cost with their library card. This offers cardholders a chance to explore new hobbies, try something different and access educational resources they may not otherwise have at home.
In addition to traditional library materials, residents can already borrow a variety of unique items—from birding backpacks to blood pressure kits. The new Library of Things will expand those offerings to include telescopes, American Girl dolls, ukuleles and more.
The program is generously supported by the Friends of the Seminole County Library. Stay tuned for the August 31 launch!

New AI Technology Helping Mosquito Control |
|
World Mosquito Day on August 20 highlights the impact mosquitoes can have on public health and the work happening every day to keep them under control.
Seminole County Mosquito Control has a new tool helping the team work more efficiently. Using AI technology, with results verified by trained staff, the tool identifies mosquitoes faster. Knowing which species are present helps staff understand potential risks, pinpoint where they may be coming from and make science-based treatment decisions.
Residents can help too by draining standing water and wearing mosquito repellent. For additional help, Seminole County Mosquito Control offers service calls to identify potential breeding sites and provide treatment when needed at SeminoleCountyFL.gov/Mosquito. |

Recycling Strategies Earn Top Honor |
|
Seminole County’s work to reduce waste and expand reuse opportunities has earned recognition from the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA). The County received the Sustainable Materials Management Technical Division Organization Award, celebrating its recycling program and efficient approach to sustainability.
Recent projects include the County’s first municipal Clothing Swap, which diverted 603 pounds of textiles from the landfill, and a redesign of the ReUse Shop at the Central Transfer Station in Longwood. Since the start of this year, more than 6,400 items have been reused through the shop, saving residents an estimated $100,000.
The County’s internship program also plays a big role in the mission, giving young professionals hands-on experience teaching environmental best practices. Over the last year, interns participated in more than 40 outreach events. |

Keeping Stormwater Moving |
|
Seminole County Public Works Roads & Stormwater crews work year-round to keep drainage systems clear, functional and ready for Florida’s heavy rainfall.
Recently, crews removed built-up sediment and vegetation along Virginia Drive in the Altamonte Springs area to help prevent blockages and reduce flooding risks.

Four Years of Hound Around Town |
|
Seminole County Animal Services is celebrating the fourth anniversary of Hound Around Town, a program that gives shelter dogs the chance to take a break from the kennel and experience life outside the shelter.
Through the program, trained volunteers take shelter dogs on two-hour field trips to walk, play, explore, or simply relax. These outings provide dogs with valuable one-on-one attention while helping them socialize, build confidence, and enjoy a change of scenery. |

Youth ages 5-18 and their families can come learn about opportunities with Seminole County 4-H at the 4-H Open House. Chat with current Seminole County 4-H members and volunteers, learn how to start your own 4-H club, find out about upcoming events, and more.

4-H Discovery Day |

Youth ages 5 and older and their families are invited to explore a variety of 4-H project areas at the 4-H Discovery Day. Participants can expect a day filled with fun hands-on activities, interactive project experiences, and creative make-and-takes as they explore 4-H program opportunities. Register by September 2.
