Explore the Improvements at Overlook Park |
|
With views of Lake Jesup and opportunities to spot local wildlife, residents can now enjoy several improvements at Overlook Park.
Seminole County marked the project’s completion September 1 with a ribbon-cutting attended by Seminole County Board of County Commissioners Chairman Andria Herr and Commissioner Jay Zembower. The project includes a rebuilt 210-foot boardwalk for improved accessibility, a new bench and trash receptacles, and ADA upgrades to the parking lot.
“It’s one of the assets our community will continue to enjoy and a commitment this Seminole County Commission has made to the quality of life in Seminole County,” said Commissioner Jay Zembower.
The project is the first completed using funding from Seminole Forever, the County’s land acquisition and conservation program, which works to protect green space, water resources and natural habitats. |

Zoo Partnership Puts Park Trimmings to Good Use |
|
A new partnership between Seminole County and the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens is turning everyday outdoor maintenance into a win for local wildlife while making the most of County resources.
Through a creative approach, zookeepers assist Parks and Recreation staff by trimming approved trees on public grounds, saving staff valuable time and resources.
The best part comes after the cut. The collected trimmings are transported directly to the zoo to serve as fresh "browse," which is an important food source for the giraffes.
The partnership highlights the power of community collaboration, bringing together the zoo and County staff to maintain public parks, use resources efficiently, and keep some of the zoo’s tallest residents well-fed. |

Safety Skills for the Whole Family |

In honor of Grandparents Day on September 13, the Seminole County Fire Department (SCFD) is offering a free class to help grandparents feel more confident caring for their grandchildren.
The Grandparent Safety Class will be held September 16 from 6–8 p.m. at 150 Eslinger Way in Sanford. Grandparents will learn skills that can make a difference in an emergency, including child and infant CPR, choking response, safe sleep, injury prevention and basic first aid. Registration is required by September 10. RSVP to Public Safety Specialist Sharon Gregory at sgregory@seminolecountyfl.gov.
For families with young babysitters, SCFD offers safety training for them, too. Seminole Safe Sitter classes for ages 11–14 will be held September 19 and October 16 from 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. The one-day, nationally recognized course covers first aid, emergency response and babysitting skills, and includes CPR certification. |

New “Library of Things” Launches |
|
The Seminole County Library launched its new Library of Things August 31, giving residents even more to explore with their library cards. Seminole County Board of County Commissioners Vice Chair Amy Lockhart and Commissioners Bob Dallari and Lee Constantine joined library staff to celebrate the new collection, which allows residents to borrow nontraditional items at no cost.
The collection includes telescopes, American Girl dolls, ukuleles and more. Made possible by the Seminole County Friends of the Library, items are available at Seminole County Library branches. |

Labor Day Closures |
|
A reminder to residents that Seminole County business offices, libraries, Animal Services, UF/IFAS Extension, 4-H, and the Museum of Seminole County History will be closed Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day.
County parks will remain open but unstaffed until 8 p.m. Curbside waste collection will run as scheduled, and the Central Transfer Station and landfill will remain open. The Household Hazardous Waste Tunnel and Customer Service department will be closed.
County offices will reopen Tuesday, September 8. |

A Century at the Museum of Seminole County History |

As the County Museum building marks its 100th anniversary, this exhibit looks back on its many years and functions through interviews, photographs, and artifacts. From the Old Folks Home to the UF/IFAS Extension, explore how the building evolved.

Nature Center Open House –
Native Plant Day/Plant Sale |

The Ed and Imogene Yarborough Nature Center is partnering again with the Cuplet Fern Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society to host a special open house event. Visitors can meet live resident animals, explore exhibits, join guided mini hikes, and enjoy plant-inspired crafts along with a native plant sale.

Ozobot Challenge for Tweens |
|
Discover the fun of coding with Ozobots. Tweens ages 8–12 will learn to program these tiny robots using simple markers and color codes. Ozobots are also featured in the Library of Things, a new collection of nontraditional items available for checkout from the Seminole County Library System. Registration is required and opens September 8 at 6:30 p.m.
